Supporting your child
- Provide cues: Children may need reminded to use their pictures to communicate. They may also need help finding the correct symbol or creating the correct phrase. Use gestures such as pointing, tapping, and facial expressions to help your child know what to do.
- Wait: Be sure to provide your child with the time the need to communicate with their pictures. When you need your child to wait for you you can also give them a picture card for "waiting" to help them.
- Be consistent: Use PECS as often as possible to help your child learn to use their system well.
- Use PECS in a VARIETY of places: It is important to use PECS in many settings where your child needs to communicate (school, park, home, etc.) This will help your child understand they can communicate every where.
- Join parent support groups: These can provide you with experiences, information and ideas from other parents using PECS.
- Attend Workshops: Online and onsite lessons are available to help you feel more comfortable using PECS. See the links below.
