More about PECS
The Picture Exchange Communication System was developed to quickly teach children with Autism Spectrum Disorder how to convey their everyday wants and needs using pictures. Children move through a series of six phases and obtain skills in requesting, persistence, discrimination of symbols, creating phrases, answering direct questions and commenting. The emphasis of PECS is improving a child's functional language use, the speech they need to accomplish goals in their environments, rather than labeling objects. The optimal progression of skills would include using pictures to communicate based on the child's needs, using multiple pictures to create sentences and finally using wide variety of communication functions.
